Lester Garfield Maddox, Sr. (September 30, 1915 – June 25, 2003), was an American politician who was the 75th Governor of the U.S. state of Georgia from 1967 to 1971. A populist governor and Democrat, Maddox came to prominence as a staunch segregationist. He served as Lt. Governor from 1971-1975. Carter and Maddox found little common ground during their four years of service, often publicly feuding with each other. In 1974 he ran for Georgia Governor again, but lost in a Runoff.
