The Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Macon served for fifteen years as the state's official music museum. The 43,000-square-foot building was home to thousands of documents and artifacts. Georgia Music Hall of Fameincluding sound recordings, costumes, instruments, sheet music, photographs, recording equipment, and memorabilia from hundreds of the state's musical legends. All eras of Georgia's musical history were covered, from the earliest Native American instruments to the latest pop beats. Founded at the fall line of the Ocmulgee River, it is part of the Macon metropolitan area, and is the county seat of Bibb County. It lies near the geographic center of Georgia, approximately 85 miles south of Atlanta, hence the city's nickname as the Heart of Georgia. After voters approved the consolidation of Macon and Bibb County in 2012, Macon became Georgia's fourth-largest city, with a population of 155,547 based on 2010 Census figures for Bibb County.
