The Sheraton Colony Square Hotel's first incarnation was as a member of the San Francisco-based Fairmont Hotel chain. Completed in 1974, the $21-million dollar, 27-story hotel was intended to give Atlantans their first taste of five-star luxury hotel accommodations. But the Fairmont Colony Square Hotel, as the hotel then was known, ran aground in the economic recession of the late 1970s, and the Fairmont name was removed in 1977. In 1990, the hotel went through changes again when the owners decided to put the Sheraton name on the property.
